Eagles of Death Metal on Rockville CA

ROCKVILLE CA
ROCKVILLE CA Apr 08, 2009

Hated by Alx Rose but loved by millions, Eagles of Death Metal bring their classic scuzz rock to www.RockvilleCA.com.

Eagles of Death Metal is Josh Homme and Jesse Hughes. Those sound like porn star names, but they’re not. The guys are just… suggestive. Hence the title of their third album: Heart On.

Homme and Hughes met way back in 1979, before they were old enough to be such wildcats. Growing up in California’s Palm Desert, the pair’s bromance began when they were six year-olds in the same soccer league. In the twenty years hence, Homme went on to fame and, later, fortune with his bands Kyuss and Queens of the Stone-Age, helping to architect an entire genre of music aptly known as “stoner rock.” Hughes, a staunch Republican and member of the National Rifle Association, took a more straight-and-narrow path, getting his degree and embarking on a career as a journalist.

When the pair decided to form a band together in 1998, they took their name from a phrase their friend used to disparagingly compare Polish metal band Vader to Seventies soft-rockers The Eagles. Get it? They released their first album in 2004, and though Homme continues to contribute equally to EoDM’s albums, he only sporadically joins the band live, as its drummer, when he’s not busy with Queens of the Stone Age.

Meanwhile, Hughes has turned into a total road dog, taking Eagles of Death Metal on tour with headliners like the Strokes, Peaches, Joan Jett and the Hives. Guns N’ Roses didn’t like them, though. In 2006, Axl fired EoDM from their support slot after they had played only one show. He called them “Pigeons of Sh** Metal.” Ouch. But, hey, they still got paid for the whole tour. Because that’s how the Eagles of Death Metal roll.

CHECK OUT TRAVIS ON ROCKVILLE CA...

Before there was Keane or Starsailor or Snow Patrol or even Coldplay, there was Travis, the Scottish rock band whose unapologetic, winsome anthems paved the way for an entire generation of heart-on-their-sleeve British songwriters. Since releasing their first album thirteen years ago, the quartet has landed in the U.K. top forty more than a dozen times, most memorably with the smash hit "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" from their 1999 disc The Man Who. (Old-school Travis fans may remember a scene from the '99 Glastonbury Festival, when the skies opened up with rain as soon as Healy began to sing the song.)

Who is Alex Patsavas listening to this week? You may hear them on your favorite TV show.

Alex Patsavas is the real-life booker for the bands appearing on Rockville CA, and this is by no means her first rodeo: An in-demand music supervisor, she chooses the signature sounds for The O.C., Gossip Girl and Grey's Anatomy and runs her own label, Chop Shop, in her spare time.

Dying to know what bands Alex is currently listening to?  Check out her playlist at Rockville CA. We've included some of the bands - but for the full band list and songs head over to Rockville CA.

PASSION PIT & KAISER CHIEFS PERFORM LIVE ON ROCKVILLE CA

Check out two all new performances and interviews with Passion Pit and Kaiser Chiefs on www.rockvilleca.com.

We love Passion Pit!

Passion Pit mastermind Michael Angelakos missed Valentine’s Day a couple years ago, but when he gifted his sweetie with some original compositions as a belated token of his affection, she told him to let others hear his music, too. An EP on indie label French Kiss featuring twitchy indie-electro tunes such as "Sleepyhead" and "Better Things" sent the blogosphere into a tizzy over the Cambridge, Massachusetts act’s giddy cut-and-paste keyboards, dancefloor-ready beats and pitch-shifted vocals. Now expanded to a five-piece live band, Passion Pit plan to release their debut full-length in May.

Check out their live performance of Better Things and Sleeyphead at www.Rockvilleca.com

We Predict a Riot when you watch Kaiser Chiefs!
Their rhythmic post-punk wallop and stadium chant choruses get dance floors jumping, but don’t underestimate the boys’ pop chops; UK chart faves Girls Aloud covered their signature tune “I Predict A Riot.”

Brand new performances from Kooks, Duke Spirit, Broken West and Nico Stai at Rockville CA! Don't miss it.

Be sure to catch all new performances by buzz-worthy indie bands Kooks, Duke Spirit, Broken West and Nico Stai at www.rockvilleca.com. We've posted a few trivia morsels for you to chew on....

THE KOOKS  The Kooks named themselves after a song from David Bowie's masterful Hunky Dory album and titled their recent sophomore LP, Konk, after the studio owned by Kinks mastermind Ray Davies, where it was recorded. Konk mixes loose-limbed punk riffs, sunny vocal harmonies and singer Luke Pritchard's impossible-to-miss
Sussex accent on tunes like "Shine On" and "Sway."

THE DUKE SPIRIT  Mesmerizing yet menacing, the stylish quintet’s mystical grooves were recently cited by fashion designer Alexander McQueen as the inspiration for his new McQ line, and he even put cool-as-hell singer Leila Moss's face on the front of one of the collection's T-shirts.

NICO STAI
If this unsigned Los Angeles singer-songwriter seems especially comfortable playing in Rockville CA, perhaps that’s because the Echoplex – the real life venue where the show is filmed – is one of his regular haunts.

THE BROKEN WEST  Released last year, the band's second full-length album, Now Or Heaven, packs irresistible melodies and big shiny hooks into compact ditties you can't help but hum. Just don’t screw up their hospitality rider: They once had a fight in a Subway shop triggered by – get this – varieties of sliced cheese.

DOORS OPEN MARCH 17th

ROCKVILLE CA
ROCKVILLE CA Mar 12, 2009

Welcome to Rockville CA, the newest show from Josh Schwartz (Gossip Girl, The OC, Chuck) set in an LA club.  It's also the coolest place to catch performances of all your favorite indie bands.

We’re really excited about the great lineup of bands slated to perform at the club, including critics’ darling Bishop Allen; mustached marauders The Eagles of Death Metal; glockenspiel-playing The Duke Spirit; hand-clapping, happy-go-lucky The Little Ones; shoe-gazing indie rockers Frightened Rabbit; California’s own Phantom Planet; and Travis, those melodic Scots, among many others. Stay tuned for more band information.

There are a few regulars you should get to know at the club: Chambers (Ryan Hansen) and Shawn (Bonnie Burroughs) own Club Rockville. Chambers has a sweet nickname, but I’ll let you experience that on your own. You’ll also run into Hunter (Andrew West), hanging around and debating the merits of every band who comes through here. He’s highly opinionated but harmless. And there’s Deb (Alexandra Chando), from Wall to Wall Records. Check out a preview at www.rockvilleca.com.
